Welcome to Salty Paws Australia – Where Healing Meets Happiness

Hi, I’m Michele, and I’m so glad you’re here! At Salty Paws Australia, my passion is simple: helping your dog live a happy, healthy life—naturally.

My journey started with T-Bone, my first British Bulldog. He was full of personality but struggled with constant skin allergies, UTIs, and painful bladder stones. We were in and out of the vet’s office, relying on antibiotics and steroids to keep him comfortable. But deep down, I knew there had to be a better way—something that wouldn’t just manage symptoms but support his long-term health.

That’s when my mission began. I dove into research, studying natural remedies and holistic healing. Over time, I started formulating my solutions using botanical herbs, including one of my absolute favorites—calendula. This incredible herb is packed with antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties and plays a role in our products today.

As a Canine Nutrition Consultant, I believe that great health starts from within. A balanced raw or lightly cooked diet can do wonders for gut health, skin conditions, and overall well-being. If you’re unsure where to start, I’d love to help! I can guide you in creating a simple, nutritious meal plan tailored to your dog’s needs. And if food sensitivities or environmental triggers are a concern, I offer Food Intolerance, Environmental, and Nutritional Imbalance testing to take the guesswork out of what’s best for your pup.

Before launching Salty Paws Australia, I was a registered dog breeder, so I understand firsthand how much we all want the best for our furry family members. Today, I share my home with four wonderful British Bulldogs, who keep me on my toes and remind me every day why I do what I do. My goal is to provide natural, holistic solutions for all breeds because every pet deserves to feel loved, free from pain, and full of vitality.

Thank you for being here and trusting Salty Paws Australia with your beloved pets. I can’t wait to be part of your dog’s wellness journey!

~ Michele

My Journey with Bulldogs – A Love Story

It feels like a lifetime ago now—I had just moved out of home, started a new job, and was excited about everything the future held. And at the very top of my priority list? Getting a bulldog!

My fascination with the breed began when I was given a little book called The Shaman Bulldog – A Love Story. Something about it resonated with me, and from that moment, I knew a bulldog would be part of my life. I spent hours researching different breeds, their temperaments, grooming needs, diets, and exercise requirements. I wanted to be sure that whichever breed I chose would not only fit into my lifestyle but, more importantly, thrive in it. The more I learned, the clearer it became—the British Bulldog was the perfect match.

Of course, with that decision came the reality of bulldog health concerns. I was determined to find a breeder who truly loved and cared for the breed, someone who focused on raising strong, healthy dogs. It turned out to be a long, frustrating search. Then, at a country dog show, I met a breeder who had a retired show dog available. And just like that, T-Bone came into my life—stealing my heart (and my bed) from day one!

Anyone who’s ever loved a bulldog knows they are truly one of a kind. Some do face health challenges, but I’ve been fortunate that most of the bulldogs in my life since T-Bone have been strong and issue-free. That’s what fueled my passion for breeding. I wanted to prove that British Bulldogs can be healthy, active, and full of life—and I wanted to help change the misconceptions surrounding this incredible breed.

That’s how Salty Paws Australia was born. My mission was twofold:
  1. To breed happy, healthy British Bulldogs that would continue to better the breed for generations to come.
  2. To provide nutritional guidance and handcrafted natural products designed specifically for bulldogs’ unique needs.
Over time, this passion for canine health expanded beyond bulldogs, and today, I love helping all breeds thrive through proper nutrition and natural care.

As a breeder (as of 2023), I also feel a strong responsibility to educate future owners. Owning a British Bulldog is a privilege, and finding the right breeder can feel overwhelming. If you’ve always wanted one but weren’t sure where to start, I hope the information on my pages makes the process easier, more reassuring, and—most importantly—exciting!

Because once you welcome a bulldog into your life, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one. ❤️🐾

T-Bone was my first British Bulldog. He started my love affair with the breed, and I couldn't leave this page without giving him an honourable mention.

JAZZ - RETIRED HELPER

A bulldog does not lick you, she kisses you; A bulldog does not look at you, she admires you; A bulldog does not bark, she talks to you; A bulldog does not snore, she reminds you of her presence; A bulldog is born to love the world, especially you.

MARLEY

Sassy Marley is very busy as we have our very first litter of 'Bulldogs on Military' puppies. Marley couldn't wait for the planned c-section at 11am on 29 July. Panting around 1am, I was hoping she would make it until the vet opened that morning. To my surprise a little piggie popped out in Marley's basket just before 3am. Another followed... and we then headed to the vets where 5 more piggies were delivered.

Grooming

Regular grooming not only helps to keep your bulldog looking happy and healthy it helps to form a bond between you and your new bulldog. Start your routine as soon as you get your puppy to get them used to being handled and groomed.

Exercise

If you are hoping to go for regular 10 km jogs with your dog, then a bulldog isn't the one for you. Bulldogs don’t necessarily need daily walks as long as the amount of food being given matches the amount of exercise they get. However, be aware that not all bulldogs are couch potatoes, many have seemingly endless energy for racing around and getting into mischief. Semi regular walks, training and daily interactive play will help to keep your bulldog healthy and active, as well as reducing potentially destructive behaviour caused by boredom.

Food

There are lots of different options and opinions about the best food for your dog, in the end you need to find one that suits your budget, your bulldog's tummy and the amount of time you have to spend preparing their food. To start with use the brand that your bulldog comes with, this is what they have been raised on and any food changes need to be made slowly to avoid upset tummies. Raised and/or tilted food and water bowls are perfect for bulldogs.

Bedding and Housing

Bulldogs do not cope well with extreme temperatures, this, plus the fact at they are very valuable, means they are strictly indoor dogs when it comes to where they need to spend the majority of their time. Bulldogs should never be left outside unattended, overnight, or for long periods of time.

Bulldogs and Children

Growing up with a dog can be a wonderful, loving experience for a child, however, there is nothing more heartbreaking for a breeder than seeing a dog surrendered because the owners are having a child and feel they can no longer keep the dog.

Bulldogs and other Dogs

Having more than one dog can be a great way to ensure your fur babies always have someone to play with and keep them company while you are not at home. However, please think about how any current or future dogs may interact with your bulldog and be prepared to put some time into making sure they are comfortable playing and living together.

What's in a name... The term "Salty Dog" originated from Appalachia, where they would rub salt into the coat of a dog as a form of flea repellent. Since salt wasn't cheap, they would only treat their favourite dog. Therefore, someone's "Salty Dog" became known as their favourite person or best friend. We are lucky enough to live by the beach and our dogs love to play in and out of the water, getting sand everywhere! So, it was only fitting when the time came to start our new venture "Salty Paws" was the perfect name for us. Our logo colours also reflect this - blue, white, yellow and green (sea, shells, sand and herbs).
